Vintage Trunks | 1920s Ocean Liner

I found this 20th Century ocean liner trunk at an antiques store in Williamsburg a  few weeks ago, and I cannot stop thinking about it. (Design Geek? yes.) It was pretty far out of my personal price range (at about $3500), but someday it will be mine… or at the very least a clients’. Its something I’ve never really seen before, and it is truly gorgeous down to every detail. These photos don’t quite do it justice.

The Ocean liner trunks interest me the most. The design/process(es) that went into them is truly incredible. The way they are sealed to keep water out, how they fold up to be moved and keep items from shifting; every detail is so well thought out… something that you don’t find as much these days. However, here are a few more vintage ones:

"A rare and highly sought-after piece of vintage Louis Vuitton luggage, the renowned "Malle Chaussures" shoe trunk (above) from the 1920s, is being offered for sale by Londons Pullman Gallery for $68,500."

A few companies are manufacturing replicas or variations on the idea. Here are some favorites:

Restoration Hardware has some cool trunks, but for the prices I’d rather go vintage. This desk piece is very cool though:
